Stakes Race
A stakes race is the top class in racing — the biggest purses, the best horses, and the races you've heard of (the Kentucky Derby is a Grade 1 stakes). Owners pay nomination and entry fees that add to the purse. Graded stakes (Grade 1, 2, 3) are the elite tier. Class relief from stakes down to allowance is a classic handicapping angle.
