Takeout

Takeout is the cut the track and state remove from every parimutuel pool before winners are paid — typically 15–25%, higher on exotics than on win betting. It's the house edge of racing, and it's steep: to profit long-term you must beat not just the other bettors but the takeout on top. This is why disciplined selectivity and finding overlays matter so much.
