Closer

A closer (or "off-the-pace" horse) drops well back early and makes its run in the stretch. Closers thrive when the early pace is fast and contested — a speed duel up front leaves tired leaders to run down. In a slow, uncontested pace, closers often can't make up the ground. Matching running style to the projected pace is the core of pace handicapping.
