HORSE RACING TERM
Front-Runner
A front-runner (or "need-to-lead" horse) breaks fast and wants to set the pace. When it's the only speed in the race, it can get an easy uncontested lead and "wire" the field — one of racing's biggest edges. When several front-runners collide, they burn each other out and set the race up for a closer.
