Sloppy Track

A sloppy track is wet dirt with water sitting on top of a still-firm base. Counterintuitively, sloppy tracks are often fast and can favor early speed, since front-runners avoid the kickback of mud in their faces. It's different from a muddy track (water absorbed into a soft base), which tends to be tiring. Wet-track pedigree and past off-track form are the tells — see track condition.
