Chalk

Chalk is racetrack slang for the favorite — from the days bookmakers chalked odds on a board and rubbed down the well-backed horses. "The chalk" is the shortest price on the board. Betting chalk feels safe but rarely profits long-term, because favorites are usually fair-priced or underlays. Value lives in disagreeing with the chalk for a reason you can name.
